BetOnSports Closes Online Poker and Casino
BetOnSports, following the arrest of its CEO David Carruthers on grounds of conspiracy, racketeering and fraud, has been forced to close down its poker and casino websites. BetOnSports has been indicted on charges ranging from running a gambling business illegally to money laundering.
Although many commentators believe that multiple charges made against BetOnSports is mainly a ploy to convict its fugitive founder, Gary Kaplan, the scope and breadth of the charges seem to be sending out a firm message to the whole of the internet gambling sector.
It is believed that the gray area over the legality of online casino and poker sites meant that the Department would be keen only on sportsbooks. BetOnSports however operates websites including BoSPOKER.com and BoSCASINO.com.
"In relation to the temporary restraining order, the company confirms that it has temporarily discontinued the provision of all of its US-facing services," the sites advised.
A government-served restraining order states that the group is prohibited from "operating an illegal gambling business through internet websites". The order likewise lists 711 websites that has links to BetOnSports, Mr Kaplan and the other defendants, including numerous casino and poker sites.
The restraining order shall take effect until a formal hearing, but a spokeswoman for BetOnSports confirmed that the management is appealing. "The order is unreasonable and we are appealing against it."
